Tasmanian farmers awarded top prize at Farmer of the Year Awards
Tasmanian farmers have shone at the 2019 Farmer of the year Awards, with Sue and Gerard Daly awarded the top prize of Australian Farmer of the Year.
Tasmania has a long and proud farming history and as fourth generation farmers, Sue and Gerard have lived through good times and bad -including the Dunalley bushfires- to become a true Tasmanian success story.
Their Dunalley farm employs 45 staff and produces up to 5000 tonnes of high-quality potatoes, and this award is a testament to their hard work and dedication to farming.
This is the 10th anniversary of the Farmer of the Year Awards and the fourth time a Tasmanian has brought home the top gong, and farmers like the Dalys are fundamental to our target of growing the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries sectors to $100 billion industry by 2030.
The Dalys have also been awarded the Award for Excellence in Innovation for their work converting unsellable potatoes into quality vodka, increasing their product’s popularity and reducing waste.
The Awards are just recognition for their excellence in farming over a long period of time, and I congratulate Sue and Gerard for this outstanding achievement and for their contribution to the community
Congratulations also to Sally Murfet who has been awarded the Rural Consultant of the Year.
Ms Murfet, from Sorell, has supported farmers, agribusinesses, industry bodies and government organisations with advice to strengthen and enhance their approach to people management and human resources right across Australia.
