STATEMENT ON APPOINTMENT AS SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS

I am honoured to be appointed as the Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and thank the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Sussan Ley, for the opportunity to serve in this crucial role.

While this is a portfolio that covers complex policy areas, it requires common sense solutions in the national interest. Australians deserve to feel safe in their communities and confident that their government will uphold our national security, enforce the rule of law and do what’s right for our country and its citizens.

Under the Albanese Labor Government, there have been appalling decisions which undermine national security and erode trust in our institutions.

The return of ISIS brides, facilitated by the Minister for Home Affairs without transparency or accountability, is just one of a string of failures. Communities deserve answers, not secrecy from this Government which is failing its promise to be upfront with Australians.

I thank my good friend, Andrew Hastie, for the work that he has done in this portfolio since the election and I look forward to working in the national interest to get it right for our country and its people.
