New research confirms value of Tasmania’s seafood industry

Australia’s seafood industry is the best in the business and its value to our communities has been confirmed in the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Industry Contributions Study 2017-18.

This is the first time a full, comprehensive report has been undertaken into the direct and indirect value of the seafood industry across Australia, and the results speak for themselves.

The report confirms the sector is worth $5.3 billion to the Australian economy, and supports a total of 41,253 full time jobs, especially in our regional and rural communities.

Tasmania leads the nation in employment with 11,647 direct and indirect jobs.

That means that over one in four seafood industry jobs are located right here in Tassie, supporting families right across the state and in our regional and rural areas.

And not only that, but the economic value of the sector is worth $1.5 billion to Tasmania- Greater than any other jurisdiction and almost one third of the national total.

This is ground breaking research that confirms the industry’s importance to Tasmanian people, families, and communities right across the state, and the Morrison Government will continue to grow the sector to create even more jobs for Tasmanians.
