After backing the passage of the hate speech laws in the Parliament this week, Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Senator Jonno Duniam has called on the Albanese Government to put one of the Act’s purposes into practice and urgently accelerate the process of listing Hizb ut-Tahrir as a prohibited hate group.
This week, the Liberal Party acted in the national interest by backing laws through the Parliament that make it easier to cancel the visas of extremists, and deport them from Australia; to increase penalties for hate preachers who incite violence and radicalise young people; and to crack down on the dangerous fundamentalism of groups such as the National Socialist Network and Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Jonno Duniam said the Government must now ensure the intent of the legislation is achieved, and that this must be done through swift and decisive action to start the process of listing Hizb ut-Tahrir as a prohibited hate group.
“Australians expect the Government to enforce the laws that we just passed in the Parliament. Step one is to accelerate the listing of Hizb ut-Tahrir as a prohibited hate group,” Senator Duniam said.
“A failure to do this would be unacceptable to the Australian community. The laws have passed, and now we need to see concrete action.”
“Hizb ut-Tahrir is an organisation intent on spreading extremist ideology. They fuel division and seek to radicalise others, sowing hatred and upending our social cohesion. They do not belong in Australian society.”
“The United Kingdom, Germany and Indonesia have acted by listing Hizb ut-Tahrir as a terrorist organisation, yet the Federal Government continues to drag its feet. Now it has run out of excuses.”
“Our social cohesion has frayed badly under this Government. They must act with urgency, and the Opposition stands ready to assist in fast tracking this group’s listing.”
