MEDIA RELEASE – $600 MILLION FOR QUEENSLAND WHILE 600 TASSIE JOBS HANG IN THE BALANCE

The Federal Government’s decision to provide $600 million in support to Queensland’s Mt Isa copper smelter has raised serious questions over the treatment of Tasmania and the 600 workers at the Bell Bay Aluminium Smelter whose jobs are on the line.

Senator Jonno Duniam said Tasmania’s manufacturing industry deserves the same level of recognition as any other state, yet so far no commitment of Federal assistance is in sight.

“Bell Bay Aluminium is a major regional employer in the north of our state that provides vital manufacturing capability that is on the brink under this Government,” Senator Duniam said.

“If the Commonwealth can back Mt Isa with $600 million, then it must also step up to the plate to back in Bell Bay’s 600 jobs.”

With the smelter’s power supply agreement expiring at the end of the year, the Tasmanian Government has made clear that it cannot shoulder the burden alone – and has called on the Federal Labor Government to act.

“We can’t afford to see 600 Tasmanian jobs lost while the Albanese Government remains silent. Our workers, our industries, and our economy deserve equal treatment to other states. Tasmania remains an afterthought in this Government’s eyes,” Senator Duniam said.

“Where are the Labor members for Tasmania? Where is local member Jess Teesdale? We need to see them standing up for Tasmania, not sitting on the sidelines.”

“Tasmania must not be left behind.”
